safeTALK is a half-day alertness training that prepares anyone 15 or older, regardless of prior experience or training, to become a suicide-alert helper. Most people with thoughts of suicide don’t truly want to die, but are struggling with the pain in their lives. Through their words and actions, they invite help to stay alive. safeTALK-trained helpers can recognize these invitations and take action by connecting them with life-saving intervention resources, such as caregivers and educators like Adrianna and Coco who are trained in ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training).
Adrianna is a Death Doula with Hospice Toronto, is a Positive Space Ambassador with the City of Toronto, and has Grief Literacy training with Being Here, Human. She is a suicide loss survivor and has been a safeTALK trainer for over 8 years. Find out more about Adrianna at http://www.adrianna-prosser.com/mentalh…/safetalk-trainer/
Coco is a high school teacher with the TDSB who is working to bring openness about mental health to students while disentangling wellness from Wellness(TM). She has been a safeTALK trainer for over 5 years, and a big ol’ nerd for 30.

Over the course of their training, safeTALK participants will learn to:
-Notice and respond to situations where suicide thoughts might be present
Recognize that invitations for help are often overlooked
-Move beyond the common tendency to miss, dismiss, and avoid suicide
-Apply the TALK steps: Tell, Ask, Listen, and KeepSafe
-Know community resources and how to connect someone with thoughts of suicide to them for further help
Training features:
-Presentations and guidance from a LivingWorks registered trainer
-Access to support from a local community resource person
-Powerful audio visual learning aids
The simple yet effective TALK steps:
“Tell, Ask, Listen, and KeepSafe”
Hands-on skills practice and development
Takeaways:
Each participant takes home a
-safeTALK learning guide
-safeTALK wallet card
-safeTALK stickers
-safeTALK Certificate acknowledging their training

Learning alongside COVID19: Due to the current Covid-19 concerns, we searched for a venue that would allow all attendees to participate and still practice safe social distancing.

The conference room at Bond Executive Offices will be exclusively ours for the day of the event. It’s located on the ground floor with direct access to the parking lot. We will have no other people using the facility, will have doors open for fresh air and there is plenty of space for the 10 attendees to have their own bubble space inside the large meeting room. We will also provide hand sanitizer, and will ask all attendees medical screening questions when arriving. All to keep all of us safe!

Join me next month for Suicide Loss Survivor Day

Some of you may know I am a suicide loss survivor, and some of you even know I am a safeTALK trainer. It would be amazing to have you at my first public workshop this November 19th for Suicide Loss Survivors Day at Red Sandcastle Theatre in Toronto.

I will be leading the workshop, and Jason Martorino, a teacher and Distress Centre volunteer with his ASIST, will be on hand to help those who may feel triggered or need a moment with someone who has crisis intervention training.

This workshop is for those who want to help those around them by being alert to signs of suicidal ideation, and want to learn how best to help those who need resources to help them stay alive. I like to think of it as suicide prevention first aid: you are the first responder, and you will help keep them alive until you can connect them to a resource that will help keep them alive.

World Suicide Prevention Day 2018

black and white photo of Adrianna by Johanna Haughton

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day and as a suicide loss survivor I would like to share some resources and thoughts around the subject.

First, the photo above was taken by Joanna Haughton as part of her Strength in Vulnerability photo-series.  Here is what she wanted to share about it:

Strength in Vulnerability. The moments of our greatest strength are those we are most vulnerable. We think strength is hard, but it isn’t. That’s weakness. Strength is found when we are broken, when we let all our defenses down, and find that after everything we still stand, love, and live.
I started this series a couple years ago. Finding people willing to be totally open has been hard. But I feel this needs to be shared and can’t wait anymore.

I thought it a fitting day – Suicide Prevention Day to start to share this series. Because we all need help sometimes, we all need love, and support. And sometimes we don’t have the strength to do it alone.

I am happy to share my story in hopes it will help others through Stories Like Crazy, my co-hosted mental health podcast with Lori Lane Murphy. I live with anxiety and situational depression each year November hits as that was the date when my brother took his life in 2010. Each year I find new ways of managing and dealing with the anniversary of his death, and each year I try to spread awareness and resources so others can be alert to suicide in their community. So today of all days I would like to give you places to learn from and lean on when dealing with suicide:

Me: I teach a workshop called safeTALK https://www.adrianna-prosser.com/safetalk-trainer/ and I would love to take your group of 10-30 people through the steps of being alert to suicide in your community and what you can do to help prevent it.

Keepsafe connections: this is from my workshop and GTA specific: https://www.adrianna-prosser.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Toronto-Keepsafe-Connections.pdf

Ontario wide connections:http://ospn.ca/index.php/helpful-links

I am planning on a safeTALK workshop in November to commemorate Andrew’s passin; let me know if you would like to be notified (in comments below) as I have about 12 spots this time around. Time and location TBA – but definitely in Toronto and most likely November 19th.

It’s ok to not be okay, but it’s also okay to ask for help.
💚

Everything But the Cat… Workshop

Adrianna will be leading a Mental Health Workshop at a local public school during the 2015 Mental Health Week. She will be presenting an abridged version of her one-woman show Everything But the Cat… and then help 300 students fight stigma.

Jennifer Cooper workshop weekend

This past weekend I participated in a casting agent workshop with Jennifer Cooper. I must say – the woman is amazing! She is open, honest, no-bullshit kinda lady. And I loved it. Her humour was a relief to all and she used it to set the tone for the room. Her great attitude made for a really productive creative space.

I had a kickin’ good time! New connections made, some great insights, and of course – time in front of the camera with some scripts I really like. This scene is from the hit tv show “Girls” (I’m Marnie).

Enjoy!
